Decorating for Smaller Spaces

One of the easiest and most effective ways to make a small space seem expansive, is to use mirrors to your advantage. They will reflect light throughout the entire space making it brighter and feel bigger.

Organization is key to a small space. The more cluttered a room looks, the smaller and more cramped it will feel. Keep it simple and clean-think about decorating with furniture that doubles as storage like a coffee table that opens up or has drawers to hide the small things that have a tendency to get spread around the room.

If you can, try to stay away from using furniture pieces that take up floor space. Instead of a bulky bookcase, use bookshelves that you can install on the wall.

Make sure you pay attention to the way you’re hanging your drapes. If you want to make the windows seem bigger and the ceiling seem higher, make sure to hang the rod close to the ceiling (about 2″ below the ceiling) and about 4″ beyond the window on either side.

Another space-saving idea is to invest in transforming furniture. Try a murphy bed that when up, doubles as a desk, or a coffee table that raises up to become a dining table. Furniture such as this can make any room multi-functional and maximize all the space in your home to the fullest.
